The Media Should Know About Your Ministry, Part 2
How many people got saved at your church this Sunday? With whom did you share this great news? Did you tell your local TV station, newspaper or radio station? You should!
When something amazing happens in our ministries we think to tell our family, friends and Facebook, but what about the rest of the world. Pitch these stories to reporters and see how God works.
Here are a few testimonies of how other ministries are pitching to the media. Hopefully this will spark some thoughts of ways to get the media interested in publicizing your ministry:
“Get the youth involved... it could be a musical concert by college students that gets covered by the local press.” (Tina Thomas, Owner of ATP Realty Group)
“The news media has very mixed feelings towards Christian ministry. They can be very cynical about it, but are at the same time attracted to it when it offers solutions to troubling problems and questions in our society. I can speak directly as a communications professional and former reporter in dealing with issues regarding a Christian ministry and as the wife of a minister. If you are looking for stories that you can publicize about your church, you will find the media interested in feature stories about unique and impactful community service projects. Around the time of high holy holidays in the church year such as Easter, Lent and Christmas, they may be interested in something unique that your church is doing to celebrate and commemorate those times. Churches that have unique ministries reaching out to those who are struggling with addictions or other life impairing issues are of interest to the media. Look for seasonal tie-ins -- if the weather has turned cold and you have a program to get coats to the homeless, it could be a story.” (Jill Schultz, JMS Communications & Research)

The Media Should Know About Your Ministry, Part 1

When something amazing happens in our ministries we think to tell our family, friends and Facebook, but what about the rest of the world. Pitch these stories to reporters and see how God works.
Here are a few ideas of testimonies you can pitch to the media. Hopefully this will spark some thoughts of ways to get the media interested in publicizing your ministry:
Christian artists, have a new CD project? We don’t always have to pay for advertising. Tell the media about your release. Build a whole story around it. Share why you made the album and how it will change people’s lives. Take people on a journey through your production or writing experience.
Often times we don’t like to think of our church as superior to another. But there has to be something about your church that caused you to choose it over the other 300,000 churches in the nation. Whatever that special element is, pitch it to the media.
Our ministries are growing every week. If someone new joins, why shouldn’t the whole city know about it? This also works in the favor of the person who joined. Share his or her story of triumph and testimony. Express how God is changing their lives.
Did you recently hook up with another ministry for a good cause? Did you tear down denominational borders and erase color lines to positively affect the community. This is news worthy.
Did you sell 10,000 DVDs? Are you successfully raising thousands of dollars towards a building fund? Have just reached your goal in a membership drive? We want to hear about it. Tell the media and make a big deal of it all. This type of news will help you stand out in the crowd.
