Freed Baptist Volunteers Arrive in Miami

Eight of the ten American volunteers detained in Haiti for the past three weeks on suspicion of child abduction were finally released and arrived in Miami early Thursday morning.

The Baptist volunteers, mostly from two Idaho churches, arrived at Miami International Airport on a U.S. Air Force C-130 cargo plane shortly after midnight. After they cleared U.S. Customs, at about 1:25 a.m., seven of the group members went into an elevator at Miami International Airport Hotel, according to The Miami Herald.

None of the volunteers spoke to reporters at the airport about their ordeal in Haiti.

However, Jim Allen, the Texas welder who joined the group 48 hours beforehand, released a statement saying “faith means everything to me and I knew this moment would come when the truth would set me free.”

The eight Americans are part of the ten-member U.S. team that was arrested Jan. 29 by Haitian authorities while trying to transport 33 Haitian children to the Dominican Republic by bus. They say they wanted to take the children to an orphanage and care for them after a 7.0-magnitude quake devastated Port-au-Prince.

Haitian authorities, however, say the group did not receive government permission to take the children out of the country.

The volunteers were subsequently charged with child kidnapping and criminal association.

On Wednesday, the judge overseeing the case released eight of the ten Americans on bail. But the volunteers were not required to post bond to leave. They only had to promise to return to Haiti if needed during the ongoing investigation.

Two Americans, however, still remain in Haiti for further questioning. The judge ruled that team leader Laura Silsby and Charisa Coulter should remain in Haiti so that authorities can question them on why they visited Haiti on a trip before the earthquake.

Attorney Gary Lissade, who represents Allen, said the fact that the Haitian judge allowed eight of the Americans to leave the country without posting bond is a good sign. He expects the charges will be eventually dropped.

Using E-Books in Ministry

In what ways can e-books be used in ministry?

To gain respect. When someone takes out their time to read a book, it is usually because they respect and value the opinions of the author. Today, there are an ever-increasing number of ministers with honorary doctrines, blingy bishop rings, and “non-denominational” followers. However, people grant another “real” respect because of what they know, not their title. Using an e-book in your ministry will help you get that respect. But note: a poorly presented or written e-book may cause you to lose respect, but an excellent one is a good reputation builder. Both your followers and your fellow ministers will grant you expert status.

To make money. There is nothing wrong with offering free e-books to gain notoriety. But at some point your time and energy should have a positive impact on your pockets. It costs a bit to publish them in electronic formation but it costs little to nothing to distribute them. After they are written, any proceeds are purely income. You will never have to pay to print more like you would with printed books. Just like with physical books, e-books must be marketed. However, there are methods of marketing that will keep the cost down and the return on investment high.

To give gifts. Is it better to give or receive? Test this theory with your e-books. Give it away and watch the value of the results. When you want someone to do something, offering them something for free almost always works. For instance, if you are trying to increase the sales of your worship CD, offer a free e-book on worship with a purchase. People want to feel like they got more out of the deal than they paid for.

To marketing. If you want more speaking engagements, publish e-books. If you want more members at your church, publish e-books. If you want to sell more products, publish e-books. How will publishing e-books help? Let’s say you have written an e-book on prosperity. If someone googles prosperity and your e-book comes up, they might read it and inherit your point of view. Well, if that e-book has links to your website and stories about your ministry or business, perhaps the read will be provoked to support your further. You have gained a new follower or customer.

Planning an event typically take a lot of time and money. If you are put in charge of planning and event you will want to make sure you have enough of both. Most events need to be planned three to six months in advance.

An event, whether you are putting it on for a, church, a company, or a school, will need to be budgeted well. Making a budget for the event before making any plans will first ensure that the organization is bringing in enough funds to have an event, and second help you in your planning to help your committee to know what limits they must stay within, thus helping them to plan accordingly. Most events will not come to an end without first presenting at least a few hidden costs. You will want to plan accordingly so there will be no surprises and nothing that has to be left out at the last minute because of lack of funds.

Once you have set a budget and have an idea of how small or large this event can be, you are going to need to choose a committee. The committee can be large or small depending on how much you need to delegate and how much responsibility each person is willing to handle. It is important when choosing a committee to already have each responsibility delegated so as to prevent confusion or double preparation for certain activities during the event.

Your committee is most likely going to need you to be a strong leader. You must have a clear idea in mind of what style, theme, or type of event this can be. When you meet with your committee you are going to want to be able to describe appropriately what the event will feel like so that you can all be on the same page and plan, purchase, and set up accordingly.

Probably most importantly will be your publicity plan. You will need to have enough people in charge of and willing to do publicity to bring out a sufficient number of people to the event to make the funds and time you are spending worth it.

With your publicity committee you will need to go over all available media and assign people to specific tasks and dates the tasks need to be performed. To do so is important because you need to make sure your guest are well aware before hand of when the event is to be held, where the event is to be held, the purpose of the event, and what is expected of them as guests.

You will also need to pick not only a date for the event but also a day of the week.

If it is to be a business, or an educational even, meant only for employees or members of the club sponsoring the event, it is best to choose to hold the event during the week. Weekends are typically a time spent with families so if the even is a social one, one held for church members, or simply a work party in which families are to be introduced, then holding the event on a weekend (when family members are more likely to attend) would be appropriate.

Following the much budgeting, planning, coordination, and publicity of the even you will want to evaluate the success of the event. Was it highly attended? Was the amount of publicity sufficient? Was your purpose for the event accomplished? Did each committee member successfully fulfill his or her role? The answers to these questions will not only help you in documenting this event and in holding and planning events to come, but it will also help you in thanking your committee members. It would be appropriate after the event to send out Thank You cards, possibly even pictures taken at the event, and express your gratitude to those who helped you see the event through.

With the appropriate budget, committee, planning, and publicity, any event can be a success.

Americans Encouraged to Join Relief Groups for 'Long Run'

Women carry bags of rice as men watch from the top of the National Stadium seats, during a food distribution operation in Port-au-Prince, Monday, Feb. 8, 2010. Thousands were killed and many displaced after Haiti's Jan. 12 powerful earthquake.

While the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl win Sunday may have wiped away memories of the Gulf Coast hurricanes that hit their city five years ago, the mourning in Haiti – for many – still has no end in sight.

Nearly four weeks after Haiti’s 7.0-magnitude quake devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas, life remains difficult for thousands in Haiti who are without food, shelter, and – most desired – the loved ones they’ve lost.

"Haiti is a nation in mourning," commented Sian Platt, child protection specialist for the Christian humanitarian agency World Vision. "People have not just lost homes, jobs and everything they own, they are somehow trying to come to terms with the death of those who loved and supported them.”

According to World Vision, more than 90 percent of the 150 people the agency has spoken with to date said they had lost loved ones – including friends, extended family or close family. They also said they needed to make time for grieving and establish normal routines in order to recover.

“Studies have found that children and adults heal faster if they are able to find routine and access the basics of life," explained Platt.

"A safe, dry home, regular meals, clean water, meaningful activity and work, are all needed in order to strengthen a resilient city now in mourning," she added.

And as rebuilding the country will take years and not months, U.S.-based groups such as World Vision are encouraging Americans to continue donating and not give in to donor fatigue.

"Compassion fatigue is not an option for our aid workers on the frontlines, and we are asking our donors and the public to stand with us for the long run as well," Edward Brown, World Vision's senior director of humanitarian and emergency affairs.

Over the first three weeks since the quake struck, more than $611 million was raised or pledged through some 81 U.S. charities, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. While that figure is more than the $519 million that was raised in the first three weeks after the South Asia Tsunami in 2004, it is less than $676 million that was raised over that same time span following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, and much less than the $1.12 billion raised after hurricanes ravaged the Gulf Cost in 2005.

Still, experts at World Vision say the donations thus far for Haiti efforts have pleasantly surprised them given the crippling recession and high unemployment.

The charity's disaster fundraising expert, Randy Strash, said Haiti is an example of "compassion resilience," or Americans' ability to remain generous in a “mega disaster” even as the economy makes giving difficult.

But Strash is hoping that more Americans – through making "mega disaster" donations – will be inspired to get involved in fighting poverty and saving lives on a more regular basis.

As a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities, World Vision works in nearly 100 countries around the globe, combating the root causes of poverty and responding quickly when disaster strikes.

World Vision also works as an advocacy group to tackle the causes of poverty, protect children and promote justice.

So far, World Vision has raised more than $30 million in the United States for its efforts in Haiti – roughly five percent ahead of the charity's Asia tsunami fundraising at the same stage in the response.

The agency, which has worked in Haiti for 30 years, began distributing aid within 24 hours after the Jan. 12 quake.

Donations to World Vision's Haiti Quake Response can be made at www.worldvision.org, by calling 888-56-CHILD, or by texting the word "GIVE" to 20222.

Visiting World Revival Church getting a great lesson on family and marriage.
Looking for 50 serious pastors who want to grow your church NOW. We can show you how call 1-888-998-4677 ext 707. Only 50 copies available..

E-books for Christian Writers

TV has gone digital. Music has gone digital. Movies have gone digital. What are you waiting for to make your book digital? Do you have a book you wrote in the 90’s? Well, let’s re-release it. This time let’s try something different. Offer it digitally. The results will increase more than your pockets.

E-books are great as a marketing tool. But it is a marketing tool that too needs to be marketed. E-books are very flexible. Rather than carrying a big box of heavy books, just bring your laptop, PDA or, even, your mobile phone. Email it or text in seconds.

Would you rather read a hard copy of a book or directly from your phone? Why?

In our current microwave generation, we want everything fast. An e-book can make things easier for the reader to skim through, search for keywords, change the font size, or print specific sections. Overall, an e-book is more flexible and functional.

For the customer who wants product NOW and doesn’t want to wait 2-3 weeks for shipping, the e-book is a dream. Just search, find, pay, download and read in minutes.

For the writer, this is a much more cost effective method. There is no mass printing or fulfillment cost. For the reader, instead of installing more bookshelves, just free up some space on your hard drive. Sometimes an entire collection can fit on one CD.

Poll: Would you prefer your favorite Christian writer’s next release be a hard copy, e-book or both?

?We Can?t Afford Marketing?

Have you heard this statement before? In 2010, who believes that organizations can succeed without marketing?

Well, let me share who says this statement a lot – nonprofit professionals. And do you know why? If you have ever made a donation to a charity or volunteered for a nonprofit, you’ll want to hear what author and Harvard Business Review blogger Dan Pallotta has to say. I heard him speak recently and he turns this sector on its heels.

Based on his book, Uncharitable:How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential, Pallotta said his research has uncovered the history of nonprofit organizations to “Puritan notions of charity and self-denial.”

Pallotta’s company, Pallotta TeamWorks, was the for-profit brainchild behind several campaigns to raise funds for breast cancer and AIDS research and awareness, creating several nationwide, marathon-like events that raised millions. But its founder came under attack for violating the sacred premises of charitable organizations: low profile, low budget, and little or no profit.

Pallotta questions the assumption that charity and capitalism should be divided. He asks, “Don’t charitable causes deserve the same kind of competitive forces that work to get results in the for-profit sector? Wouldn’t social causes be better served if charitable organizations were headed by the kind of bright, aggressive executives that work in the for-profit sector?”

I absolutely concur! I’ve worked on the “inside” of the nonprofit sector at the national and regional levels, and found it frustrating that people thought we were only effective if we didn’t spend more than 10-15% of “overhead” on administrative costs and fundraising. So, where did they place marketing expenses in the budget? On the program side. Sad.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that a for-profit, capitalistic approach can help us solve more of our society’s problems?
